Why buy Nikon Coolpics P90 digital camera?

by Marcus Liebe

For many people the whole idea of buying a digital camera is confusing with so many to choose from. Finding the best digital camera should really be quite simple with all the consumer reports and comparisons available both online and in written periodicals. Eventually saving enough money to buy that eye-popping, 12 megapixel, 24x optical zoom with up to a sixteen gigabyte expandable memory using super hi-speed SD memory card and of course, very compact; which we hope be the envy of almost everyone we know. The problem is by the time you actually get to the mall, the model you have set your heart on is no longer the one to own as there is a new better version that you must now have.

Unfortunately, technology doesn’t ever stop for breath and your personal choice is no exception, so after months of searching you now have to have the latest version of the camera which has taken over the accolade.

Suddenly you are frustrated again as you learn that because you want the best digital camera, it is going to cost you considerably more than you thought. But this dilemma is very short lived because you promised yourself the best digital camera and that is what you are going to have. If you are new to digital cameras and photography the tips below might be useful and point you in the right direction. The resolution is probably the most important feature to look at so go for a model with the highest megapixel resolution you can afford.

Although it is not always the case, a good rule of thumb is the more pixels you have the better the image will be when it is printed. If you are someone that likes to print large photos then the more pixels you have, the larger it can be printed out without distortion. LCD screens have over the years become much larger which means you can frame your shot easier and view the result with more ease than ever before. The best digital cameras are able to touch up and edit the images this is an excellent feature to have as standard.

As digital photo printing costs have reduced over the last few years more and more people are taking advantage of this so the higher the number of pixels you have, the larger you can print your images. Superior color definition and the chance to print off larger than normal images are usually the main reasons for buying a model with high megapixel resolution. To see your subject clearly and view your shots afterwards then you will need a large LCD screen. The best digital cameras are able to touch up and edit the images this is an excellent feature to have as standard.

However, if you remember that a large screen equals higher power consumption, smaller screen, lower power consumption you can’t go wrong so just carry a spare set of rechargeable batteries with you everywhere. A digital zoom facility is available on almost every digital camera these days but optical zoom cameras cost more but the result is far superior. Unfortunately digital zooms just don’t cut it so avoid them unless you are buying an inexpensive camera as a gift for a child. Images on these cameras are stored on small storage cards that can have a huge memory capacity but be sure to buy the right type.

Memory cards are used in all sorts of electronic gadgets and you may already have heard of the main ones: Sony’s Memory Stick, compact Flash, Secure Digital and XD cards for example. Fortunately the price for digital memory seem to fall in line with the size of cameras resolution increases so buy the largest you can affords and that is compatible with your version. The cost has dropped rapidly so take advantage of these larger storage capacity cards now that the price is lower. After all is said and done, the best digital camera you choose should match your lifestyle as much as it should your pocket. either you use your camera for fun or for serious photography, as long as it is used it will be worth the financial outlay.

Moby Dick Exhibit

by Mara Hernandez-Capili

Moby Dick is an All-American Classic Tale. It was written in 1851 by an American novelist named Herman Melville. The story is about the battle between an angry ship captain named Ahab and a ferocious white sperm whale. Moby Dick is a story that was regarded the high value of being discussed in American schools as part of their curriculum. The tale has a curios history because it was not accepted by the mass at its release. It wasnt until 1930 when the book was republished with illustrations that it finally gained popularity.

American painter Frank Stella made several art works focusing on the concept of Moby Dick from 1985 to 1997. He created one artwork or two to each of the novels 165 chapters. The varying artworks altogether sum up to about 266 pieces of sculptures, metal relief, murals and prints. Stellas likeness and passion for the novel indeed bordered down to obsession for being able to create this massive collection. His works are currently considered as one of Americas priceless treasures.

An exhibition of the Moby Dick works by Frank Stella will happen at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Michigan. It will not feature all of the Moby Dick artworks but some 30 pieces including his acclaimed masterpiece The Fountain. The exhibit will be opened to the public and everyone is encouraged to see it on January 23 up to May 3, 2009. The event is a great time for families to enjoy and for parents to bond with their kids.

Moby Dick is a literary piece that marked itself in American History. It was a popular tale and a classic favorite. One interesting fact about the story is its inclusion of a character named “Starbuck” that is the main inspiration of the famous coffee chain. Starbuck is the young mate of Captain Ahabs ship who is the sole person who contradicts Ahabs plan to fight and kill the whale. His character was of a gentle and possibly coward nature who longs to go back home to his young wife and son.

Catch a glimpse of the exhibit. Be inspired at the talent of an all-around American artist.

Digital Photography Lessons – Are Shadows Ruining Your Photos?

by Dan Eitreim

Terrific photographs can be ruined by distracting shadows.

Unfortunately, shadows are a constant challenge for photographers. Fortunately, there are quite a few easy but effective fixes.

First, what causes the shadow? Well, obviously it is caused by the light hitting your subject and not hitting the background behind them.

So, if you’ve got a problem with shadows falling on the background, one way to remove the shadow is to remove the background. Obviously, if there is nothing for the shadow to fall on, voila! No shadow.

So, the first fix in our shadow removal arsenal is to remove the backdrop – if possible.

When your photo shoot is being done outside, all you have to do is move your model so that there is no backdrop behind them. Pretty simple.

If your photo session is being done indoors, you obviously can’t take down or remove the walls, so move your model into the center of the room. They’ll be posing far enough away from the walls so that the shadows will magically disappear. Usually makes for a more unique and better shot too!

The second way to approach the problem is to position a light to illuminate the background.

If you are using a “studio” lighting setup, once you get your subject lit the way you want them, add an additional light that strikes only the background and not the subject.

Adding the extra light can be more than just a shadow remover. By adding in scrims, cookies and colored gels to modify the light, it becomes a part of the design of the photo. The modifiers will throw colors, patterns and shapes on your backdrop.

Think of light like a ball on a billiards table. It will hit the subject at a certain angle and reflect off at that same angle – like the billiards ball striking the cushion and bouncing off. (This is important to remember when trying to eliminate glare from eyeglasses.)

The shadow on the other hand, is ALWAYS directly in line with the light. So, you can minimize the shadow problem by changing the angle of the lights so that the shadow falls into an area that won’t show in the final photo.

Indoors, with a studio light setup, just move the lights around until you find the optimal angle. Outside, you have to move your model around until the light is coming from the right direction. Reflectors can help too! you can change the angle of light when using an on camera flash by bouncing it off a wall or the ceiling. Just be sure the wall or ceiling are not painted a color that will throw an odd color cast on your model.

The size and strength of the light source – as related to your model – is what will control the harshness and intensity of your shadows.

If you lower the intensity of the light, that will also lower the intensity of the associated shadow. It will still be there, but you may be able to minimize its’ distracting effect.

Moving the light further from the model or reducing the lights’ power are two simple ways to lower the intensity of light hitting your subject.

You can wrap light around a model – and minimize the shadows – by making the light bigger. This is done with reflectors, softboxes and umbrellas.

These modifiers can be thought of as being like a cloud. A cloud that moves between your model and the sun is nothing more than a giant diffuser. It makes the entire cloud a light source (bigger) instead of just the sun (smaller). This wraps the light around your model minimizing shadow intensity. Go outside and check out the difference in shadows when the light is coming from the sun and from a cloud. You’ll notice some astounding differences.

There are entire books written about this subject and this message is by no means an exhaustive solution, but it should give you something to consider.

Happy shooting.

Helmet Cameras Extremely Useful

by Fiona Fidelis

Many TV broadcasters are flocking toward the use of helmet cameras to create a better sportscast. Many events, such as auto racing, skiing, and even American Gladiators make use of the handy little cameras. Helmet cams are also becoming more popular for every day people, thanks to their inexpensiveness and rugged reliability. They have a very long life, and serve many different purposes.

One of the greatest things about helmet cameras is that they can take a beating and still work perfectly fine. Theyre built to be tough, able to withstand severe weather ” and some are even waterproof. Theyre tough because theyre designed to be used in extreme situations where larger cameras arent practical. As a fortunate side effect, theyre also designed to be very portable and lightweight. In most cases you dont even notice the camera on your head.

Sports TV broadcasting makes the most use out of these little wonders. By attaching a helmet camera to an athlete, viewers get the chance to experience their favourite sport on TV in a different way ” from the athletes point of view. They can get better viewing angles thanks to wide-angle lenses, and they see more of the action up close. Helmet cameras are great for coaching staff too, as they can get a feel for what their athletes are seeing and make necessary adjustments based on the footage.

Helmet cameras range in price from inexpensive and quite affordable to very high quality, expensive models, used mostly by TV stations. The top-selling models right now are the Vio POV 1.5 and the Gopro Hero series, which range in price depending on the model. These cameras record to either compact SD cards, or the newer micro SD cards. Theyre really flexible with regards to how you mount them, which means you can use them just about anywhere.

If youre really into documenting your sports and adventures from your point of view, helmet cameras are definitely the way to go. Not only will you be able to re-live your experience, but you can let others see everything the way you do. Plus, if youre really into editing together your own videos, helmet cams give you a different point of view and different angles than a hand-held camera. A helmet cameras flexibility alone will give you many different options, and theyre not a big investment either.

Scanning for a Slideshow Project

by Pete Fontaine

Everyone has that big box of photos in the back of the closet that’s worth a million and at the same time next to nothing. If you can’t share your photos easily then what good are they? You’ll be surprised to find out that it’s simple and inexpensive to turn your deteriorating images into an enjoyable work of art. There are photo scanning services that can digitize your photos for as little as a nickel apiece. And don’t try this yourself! Photo scanning at home is heart stoppingly boring!

You can build your own slideshow by purchasing software. My favorite is Pro Show Gold by Photodex. This software is relatively simple to use and has lots of features that make the project fun. You just add your photos to the program, then drag them into the order you want. With Pro Show Gold you can edit your photos and color correct, add your own music and then synchronize it to the photos. You can add text to the photo in the location you choose and use the “Ken Burns” effect to zoom from place to place on your images. With Pro Show Gold you can play your slideshow on TV. You’ll be amazed at how good your 4×6 photos look on a 50″ TV.

Free slideshow software is everywhere on the web. A quick search will yield tons of opportunities to create slideshows to share with friends, or to upload to your social networking site. Take a little time to investigate the features, and always download from a trusted site. Though most free software will not allow you to show the end product on a TV, they often include the ability to include music and do limited photo editing. Check out Google’s Picassa 3, Extra Photo Slideshow Free, and Wildbit software.

You may want to think about placing your slideshow in a digital picture frame. Prices have come down on digital picture frames with some 14″ frames selling for as little as $99. Some of the smaller frames now go for under $25. We expect this trend to continue. With memory card prices also hitting new lows you can afford to put your entire digital photo library on them. Lots of digital frames come with slideshow software installed, and some will play audio. So when your friends come over you can crawl into the back of that closet to dig out the box of gradually fading photos, or you can flip on that beautiful digital picture frame.

You can have your slideshows hosted online at Picturetrail or Iwebphoto. You can then send your friends and family a link to your slideshows. This can simplify matters somewhat. If you have a lot of photos it can save everyone from downloading the files. And you can add remove or edit the slideshows at any time. Don’t forget to add a text description to your slideshow to let everyone know what the photos are about. And go ahead and jazz up your photos with special effects or make a few black and white. Have Fun!

Make sure you choose a photo scanning service that scans at 300 dpi, and don’t pay for more. See if you can find a service that includes automatic photo enhancement at a reasonable price. This can do wonders for some if not all of your images. And be sure to insist on a complete copy of the original scans that have not been rotated, enhanced, or manipulated in any way. Then always make a copy of your master scans to use for anything. Shop around, scanning costs can vary greatly.

There are additional benefits to scanning your photos for a slideshow. By digitizing your photographs you can permanently protect them from damage and destruction and stop their everyday deterioration from age, mold, and moisture. You can also make complete copies of your scans and put them in two or three places. This not only protects them from loss or damage, you can then send copies to family and friends. Your precious memories are permanently secure.
