Experiment with exposure Digital cameras usually work best in sunlight, just like film cameras. When you move indoors, or into dim light, things get much trickier — just like film cameras. So experiment.
If you can, shoot your subject from different angles and with different lighting. If you can manually turn off your flash, do so. Other flash settings can also be tried such as ‘fill flash.’ Sometimes even a perfectly exposed picture can be improved with fill flash. Other times turning off the flash leaving the subject underexposed can add an element of drama.
You can take the same photo three different ways using three different exposure options and the result will be three totally different pictures. What’s even better is that all three can look good, but you have to experiment.
If at all possible, bracket your shots, with one shot slightly underexposed, one slightly overexposed, and one “just right.” Some digital cameras will do this automatically, but even then you need to practice. If you are expecting the camera to shoot one frame and it shoots three, there is an excellent chance the last two will look like they were taken by a very surprised photographer.
Special Features: Many digital cameras now come equipped with a variety of special features. Some of these include allowing you to take short QuickTime clips and the ability to record sound annotations. Even though some allow you to experiment with effects such as black and white or sepia-tones, focus on mastering the basics first before taking on the special effects.
Keep in mind that some of these tricks, such as black and white or sepia-toned images, can be done without the camera. Just load up a normal color image in Photoshop and, in a few minutes, you can have perfect black and white or sepia-toned photos. In other words, if you can do it easily in Photoshop, you might be better off concentrating on taking a good color photo, and worrying about special effects later on at your leisure.
On the other hand, you should try out other special effects. For example, if you pan your camera to track a car moving at high speed, the car will be in sharp focus but the background will be blurred, making an interesting picture. Or you can do the opposite: focus on a particular stationary object — a child flying a kite, a freshly-painted fire hydrant — and allow a speeding car to enter the frame. You’ll then have a sharply focused center of attention with the added benefit of motion.
Silhouettes are another nice special effect. Try taking a photo with your subject in shadow, eclipsing a brightly-exposed object in the background. Now try the reverse, a brightly exposed subject against a dark background. One can be just as interesting as the other. Getting a good silhouette with film is expensive, as you shoot a lot of frames with little or no reward. There is no cost with a digital camera, just a little time and patienceboth of which will be well worth it!

Landscapes are one of the most continually photographed subjects. Impressed by an attractive scene, most people quickly pick up the camera and snap. Unfortunately, the results are all to often disappointing. The real scene has the direct experience of the sun’s warmth, the breeze and general atmosphere. The photograph obviously misses these features. The real scene also has a depth and the eye moves around the landscape, seeing objects close by and far away, and so deliberately putting some depth into the photograph can make a great difference to the effectiveness of the picture. A few moments used to select the right viewpoint can be well spent so it’s best to avoid shooting too quickly. Look for ways to give the picture depth with a foreground, mid-ground and distance. This can often be achieved simply by moving one’s position just a few feet.
The next thing you have to do is get all the equipment that you’re going to need. This is going to vary depending on what kind of field you want to get into. For example, if you’re planning to become a photographer who specializes in stock car racing, then you are going to need a lot of equipment for taking high speed photos. The good news is that you’re not going to have to spend a lot of money on lighting since these photos will be taken outdoors. Conversely, if you’re planning to photograph fashion models, lighting is going to be critical to your photos and your lighting equipment expense is going to be quite high. The next thing you’re going to need to do is advertise. You’ll have to print out business cards, take out ads in magazines and newspapers and more or less get the word out that you exist. If you’re hoping to break into the field taking photos for a magazine like Playboy, then you’re going to have to first get some private work photographing models in order to submit these photos to the magazine itself. Before you do that though, you’re going to have to write to the magazine for permission to send photos. Most publications do not accept unsolicited material.
By using digital photography, even the novice photographer has the capability to produce professional quality pictures at a fraction of the cost. Photography has been around for a long time, and people have always wanted their memories captured to last for generations. By using digital photography, the photography community has opened up the doors for photo sharing in every technological form if one has the right equipment. The first thing that a person must invest in when thinking of using digital photography is the right camera. In order to understand what constitutes the right camera for someone, a person must understand how exactly the digital camera works. A digital camera works is by using an electronic device to store and capture an image into binary data. In other words, the picture is turned into a form of information that can be understood by a computer’s electronic brain.
Anyone who wants to learn how to be a photographer doesn’t have to enroll for many years to get a degree. There are colleges who offer this as one of the subjects which the student may take as an elective. Can you still learn how to be a photographer being out of school for many years? The answer is yes. The only thing needed is your dedication to learn from the proper techniques and a camera to take some shots. Some students don’t have to go to campus anymore. There are some institutions that offer distance education. A good example is the New York Institute of Photography. You will learn everything from exposure, lenses, the various techniques used to cover different events, journalism and much more. Being affiliated with the school, you will be entitled to free online magazine articles such as contests and digital imaging.
The first thing you need to make sure of is that the school/community college you’re attending is an accredited school. This means that the school is legitimate. I have seen WAY too many advertisements on the Internet and in local newspapers for Digital Photography classes only to find out that this is just some guy or girl teaching out of their apartments. C’mon! By going to an accredited university you are ensured that you will be getting your money’s worth, and that the class will be taught be someone competent and who went through an enormous amount of education that they are now passing along to you!
There are many people who want to make photography as their career. Many people find it fulfilling to engage in a life of taking pictures. This venture entails a good photography education. Just like any other kind of school, the appropriate selection of a photography school which will meet the needs of the students is essential for a good education. This article tries to lay down some tips on how you can choose a good photography school. Listed below are the tips: - Look at the bigger picture: In choosing a photography school, you must be able to look from afar to able to see the bigger picture. The selection of a photography school must be made under consideration of your general career goals. There are several tracks which can be taken in the field of photography.
To keep yourself enthusiastic about your subject, you might want to shoot two or maybe three projects at a time. Spend a Saturday afternoon shooting your local town’s attractions and people, and next weekend drive into the nearest city to shoot architecture and caf culture. But how do you choose projects that will assist in creating strong selling images? Search stock photography agencies, look through travel magazines and newspapers. What you see everyday is what sells. The key is to plan what you are going to shoot. Although we are all guided by weather conditions, it is possible to select the images you want before you arrive at your location. I rarely arrive without at least a few images mapped out in my head, and never without a shoot list. As travel photographers, it goes without saying that we have a passion for travel. It’s why we do what we do. But it is an extremely difficult business to get into. The catch 22 is that to produce a portfolio or stock image library you need time and money. To fund your photography you need to work. It will take time and dedication, but by shooting close to home you will gradually improve your photography skills and start to build a portfolio of images to be proud of. It all comes down to the way we view our surrounding.

Are you leaving your finest photographs collecting digital dust on your hard drive? Do you have vivid, ‘precious moment’ images that you’d like to look at more often? If so, how about turning them into a one-of-a-kind, custom digital photo calendar?
Of course, everyone knows that not all of our photos will be perfect… But some will jump right out at you and remind you of certain times and ‘warm feeling’ experiences. Grab these images! You’re about to put them into your own portfolio - and showcase them proudly to the world (or at least, to your ‘inner circle’ of family and friends!)
For an abundance of good reasons, it’s great to share our family or ‘good times’ images with others. In fact, you’re naturally inclined to want ‘everyone’ to see them… But how? And ‘what’s the best way to do this?’
One fun and yet practical way is through a simple digital photo calendar. Of course in this case we’re not talking about literally an actual ‘digital photo calendar’ (even though it is one in its own right). In simple terms we are making an interesting and personalized wall calendar using your own digital photos.
To put in simply, you can create a “photo calendar” that you can print out, give to your friends and family, hang on your wall, sell on your website, promote across the Internetthe possibilities are endless.
So let’s go ahead and actually build ourselves one of these cool little photo calendars.
Let’s take a look at the steps.
To begin, simply pick out some of your favorite photos to be included in our project. Next involves a little bit of research, but I’ve done a bit of that to help you save some time and make things easier for you. Here are some places where you can easily transform your digital photos into a photo calendar
Here’s a few websites that will make that transformation for you: www.bighugelabs.com, www.desktopwallpaperphotos.com, www.snapfish.com and www.cafepress.com. The first two sites listed will give you a free digital version of your calendar that you can download to your hard drive and then print out or save to a CD/take to a print shop. The others provide a ‘real’ wall or desk calendar that you can purchase and then ’send’ to yourself, or a friend.
Knowing which website to use is probably the hardest thing to figure out and decide on when turning your “plain” photos into a calendar. The rest is actually pretty simple although you do need to have at least a working knowledge of how to prepare your photos before printing. There are plenty of programs, tutorials and guides that can help you accomplish this. If all else fails, get someone to help you if it proves too challenging or if you just don’t have the time.
Then just a few more simple steps…
1) Upload your photo/s to one of the photo calendar web sites above.
2) Pick a specific calendar size and other details
3) Choose on the months and/or years you want your calendar to have
4) Hit the ‘create’ button or order your own calendar
Simple, eh? Once you’ve done all that then you’ll have yourself an enjoyable photo calendar that you can then download onto your hard drive as a .PDF, or maybe a jpeg image file… Or, if you’re ‘outsourcing’ the printing, you can expect to receive your calendar in a week or so…
But overall, not too bad for a few minutes work!
Now you can take your digital photo calendar masterpiece out to impress friends and family. Be creative with it and print it out on a card, e-mail it to everyone, or just hang it on your wall for your own enjoyment. Photo calendars make a great gift and every time someone looks at it they will be reminded of you and be able to share in your special memories.

Infrared Pictures have always had a certain magical appeal for me. The mixture of real and almost surreal creates a fascinating image in infrared photos.
Now, what I was wondering, is if there are digital infrared cameras that are not used for security stuck up on a wall. Rather, I want a digital point and shoot or digital slr that does infrared. It turns out that there are digital cameras that can do infrared photography.
In fact most digital camera sensors see infrared light but the cameras often have a filter built in to get rid of the infrared information making for a sharper or clearer traditional color photo. There are ways to remove this filter but be careful and know that it will usually change the focusing of the camera.
On the bright side, (pun not intended but… never mind, let’s continue) there are some cameras now that allow you to choose if you want to shoot infrared or not.
One example is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50. This camera includes a special “NightShot” mode that uses infrared to take shots in the dark.
( The lowest price I found at a trusted store is at Abe’s of Maine.)
Another option is using an infrared filter on the lens. (These appear to range in price from about $35 to $150.) I don’t know what size of lens you have so I’m not going to try and find the best place for you to get a filter, but just do a search for infrared lens filter.
This method with the lens filter works for some digital cameras but not all. There is list compiled at Cocam.co.uk of cameras that work with this method. If you know of more digital cameras that can do infrared photography please leave a comment for us.
Then of course the obvious option is to use a good old film camera and buy some infrared film for it from your favorite camera/film store. You can even get some from Amazon. (Is there anything we can’t buy from Amazon these days? )
Speaking of Amazon, there is a brand new book coming out that you can pre-order called Digital Infrared Photography. It is from the O’reilly group and looks like a great book for taking great infrared photos. The O’reilly group puts together great books and guides. If you are truly interested in shooting infrared photos, it’s highly recommended you try this book.
Enjoy and feel free to share with us your methods and/or equipment for taking infrared pictures, by leaving a comment below.

The Sony handycam camcorder has become one of the staples in the camcorder industry.
One of the best features of the Sony brand of the handycam camcorder is the ease of use.
Other benefits of owning a Sony camcorder include having Nightshot and a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar optical zoom lens. The Nightshot allows a person to take videos and still shots in the dead of night. This is not included on every model, but for those that do have it, the effects are amazing. The zoom lens is one of the most up-to-date, with optical technology. It includes image stabilization and this is key because the Sony brand of digital camcorders are hand held and this can prove to be a wobbly experience.
Owning and operating a Sony handycam camcorder has never been simpler.
A person can locate these camcorders at a variety of outlets, including Sony’s own website. They can even purchase refurbished models directly from the manufacturer. The actual operation of these great camcorders is so simple that a trained chimp could do it. Sony has really gone above and beyond when it comes to filmmaking and capturing lifelong memories.
Sony has been producing great electronics for years and thanks to their handycam line of camcorders, an individual can take advantage of the products made by the leader in the electronics industry. These digital camcorders are easy to use and are meant for everyone, no matter how technologically savvy they may be.

If you want to purchase a digital camera, you really must have at least some idea of what you need to look out for and avoid. You don’t have to be an expert, but you must at least know some basics to make sure you don’t end up with an inadequate camera for your digital photography. The following is a series of things you need to understand and look out for, there there is less plus several things you must avoid.
1. megapixels:
From a basic standpoint, generally speaking the more megapixels a digital camera has the higher quality images it will be capable of outputting. You will find that with the higher end more professional digital cameras (8 to 12 plus megapixels) the image quality will also be increased significantly depending on the quality of the cameras lenses, but for lower end digital cameras this will have less effect.
Now in regard to the number of megapixels, there is one thing you really do need to look out for. It is vitally important that you read the small print as it were on the digital camera. You see many digital camera manufacturers will have you believe there camera is capable of a higher number of megapixels then it really is.
What many digital camera manufacturers do is to print on the camera or in their manuals say six megapixels in big writing, but underneath there’s writing where they will put something like five megapixels enhanced to six using software. If the camera states something along these lines the camera is not truly six megapixels at all. If the camera has to use software to enhance its number of megapixels it will not be as good as a true six megapixel camera.
A digital camera’s zoom
How much zoom your digital camera should have is really going to depend on the sort of use you give your camera, so only you can make this decision. However it’s important to remember that the more zoom you have the more you are going to be able to do with your camera.
There are two kinds of zoom, optical and digital. Optical zoom zooms in using lenses within the camera, so there will be no quality lost. Where as digital zoom on the other hand will simply make your pictures bigger and so will lose you are lot of picture quality.
Many digital cameras here too can be misleading since they will often state the maximum digital zoom in big letters on the camera without actually stating that it is in fact digital zoom, they will of course tell you that it is digital zoom so as to cover themselves legally but again only with very small print nearby.
Personally I never use digital zoom. This is because I would much rather take my picture at full quality and then when I’m at home make use of my PC to make the image larger. This way it is possible to see in real time how much visual quality you will be giving up and of course you will still have the original photo at full quality.
3. Powersupply
It really is surprising just how many people never stop to think about this, but yet when you think about it, what could possibly be worse than running out of battery power right when you have a great opportunity to take great photographs?
With the lower end cheaper more commercial digital cameras AA and AAA rechargeable batteries are quite common. In recent years these batteries have come down considerably in price so this isn’t such a bad thing. You just have to remember to keep several sets charged and ready to go at all times.
Some lower end and most of the higher end digital cameras will only accept their own powersupply specifically made for that camera. These powersupplys are normally Lithium batteries and can be quite expensive.
Since these batteries are normally somewhat more expensive you will also want to take this into account when comparing price on each different camera model. You do normally get the added advantage of a longer period of usage of the digital camera when using these battery packs.
Some digital cameras can take both normal batteries and their own specific battery pack. This could, as I’m sure you can imagine, be a pretty cool feature since it will give you full control.
If you take into account everything mentioned above when you compare digital cameras, you should have no problem in choosing a good camera for your usage. Also remember to check out on-line reviews as they will help you compare each camera.
Checking out on-line reviews can become even more important when you’re looking to buy professional digital cameras, since lenses and other specifications for the cameras can make a lot of difference at this level.
